Advanced Practices of the Änanda Bhairava Tantra
The Nine Gates belong to the Änanda Bhairava stream of Sri Vidya Tantra, a tradition in which spiritual development is approached not simply through ideas, but through mantra, contemplation, sacred practice, and the gradual transformation of consciousness.
Each Gate opens through a particular mantra. Each mantra introduces us to a distinct spiritual energy, quality, and dimension of experience. Rather than treating these as nine unrelated practices, the tradition understands them as different doorways into a larger, multidimensional reality.
The image of a gate is important. We are not simply learning nine Sanskrit mantras. We are approaching nine thresholds of consciousness.
As the Gates accumulate, so does the richness of the inner landscape. One practice builds upon another until we begin to experience what Tantra itself offers: not a single way of perceiving spiritual reality, but many dimensions held within consciousness at the same time. This multidimensionality was one of the primary intentions behind the original Nine Gates journey.
Sri Vidya gives us a beautiful image for this spiritual progression: Meru, the sacred mountain.
In a traditional mantra mala, the additional bead beyond the 108 is called the Meru or Sumeru bead. It represents the summitâthe high point toward which the spiritual journey is directed.
The Nine Gates can be approached in much the same way.
There is no assumption that every practitioner arrives at the mountain from the same place. Tantra has traditionally recognized that spiritual development is deeply personal. Different students bring different experiences, capacities, affinities, and needs to the path.
Yet the Gates provide a way of progressively ascending.
Each mantra becomes another threshold. Each practice offers another perspective. Gradually, what initially appears to be a collection of practices begins to reveal an integrated spiritual landscape.
And at the summit stands Meru UpÄsanaâa sacred practice through which the geometry, mantra, symbolism, and contemplative vision of Sri Vidya come together. Â
This powerful practice combines mudras with mantras.
Step into the retreats where these practices were explored, experienced, questioned, and lived within a community of practitioners.
The Nine Gates unfolded originally as a nine-month spiritual immersion within the Yogic Mystery School.
For each Gate, students entered a period of mantra sadhana centered upon the mantra associated with that particular dimension. The core discipline was deliberately simple: the mantra was practiced 11 times daily for 11 days, allowing the practitioner to remain with one Gate long enough for its character to begin revealing itself. Â
Around that central practice, I brought students together for extended interactive retreats devoted to the Gate we were exploring.
These gatherings allowed us to move well beyond instruction. We practiced together, explored the spiritual principles associated with each Gate, worked with meditation and related practices, and addressed questions arising from the students' actual experience.
Those day-long interactive retreats have been preserved and now form the heart of this course.
You therefore have the opportunity to enter an experience that originally unfolded over nine months with a committed community of practitionersâwhile moving through the material at a pace appropriate to your own life and spiritual development.
The advanced practices of the Änanda Bhairava Tantra you will learn are treasures that will serve you throughout your life.
Tantra does not regard spiritual development as a purely linear accumulation of information.
Traditional Tantric study is highly experiential and individual. A practice is not valuable merely because we understand what it means. It must gradually be assimilatedâallowed to enter our practice, perception, and consciousness.
This is one reason the Nine Gates were originally explored over an extended period.
The objective was never to race through nine mantras.
It was to allow each Gate to become a dimension of consciousness before proceeding further. Â
The archived retreats preserve this experiential quality. You will encounter not only formal teaching but the questions, reflections, practices, and interactions that arose as real students worked with the material.
You are therefore invited to approach the course in the same spirit:
not simply to complete it, but to inhabit it.
The Sanskrit word upÄsana carries the sense of drawing nearâapproaching the sacred through sustained attention and practice. This is the essence of the Nine Gates. Each Gate invites us to draw near to a particular dimension of spiritual reality through mantra. The Gate is therefore not simply something we pass through. It is something that opens within us. Through practice, what may initially seem distant or conceptual becomes increasingly intimate and experiential. With each Gate, another dimension of consciousness is given the opportunity to reveal itself.
At the center of each Gate is its mantra.
That keeps the process remarkably simple.
You can work primarily with the Nine Gates themselves, allowing each mantra to become the focus of your practice. Or, as your experience develops, you can gradually enrich a Gate with complementary practices drawn from meditation, sacred sound, ritual, deity contemplation, or related teachings.
This reflects an important principle of Tantra: not every practitioner needs to take exactly the same route up the mountain.
Some students will be drawn deeply into mantra. Others will discover that a particular Gate opens naturally into meditation, ritual, sacred sound, or contemplation. The course gives you a substantial spiritual framework without requiring you to undertake everything at once.
There is no need for spiritual overload.
The aim is assimilationâallowing practice to become part of your consciousness and lived experience.
One Gate. One mantra. One dimension at a time.
