GOLDEN RULES OF MANTRA CHANTING HELP YOU TAP INTO AN AUTHENTICITY
Sometimes, as mantra practitioners, we have not been introduced to the fundamentals by our teachers. At other times, we have been taught incorrect or no rules and have developed our mantra chanting accordingly. As a result, we get a trickle charge from our practice without knowing what we are missing.
1. CADENCE: The most critical rule of mantra chanting, which most Western practitioners (and teachers) get wrong, is cadence. At the beginner level of mantra chanting, this is the first rule we teach in our school. Cadence is the natural rhythm of speech, and mantra is, at its core, sacred speech.
2. CONSONANTS: Sanskrit is a language of tremendous phonetic sophistication, which is why the word for the language, Samskrita, means "well produced, well shaped, well-formed." When consonants are correctly pronounced, and particularly when the heavy breathing aspirates are sounded, the shape of the language takes place in our consciousness, awakening Shakti in powerful ways.
3. TONES: There are two tonal aspects to mantra chanting. The first is knowing the prescribed tones. The second is shaping those tones properly. Even if one does not know the traditional tones for a mantra, it is still vital to shape the tones we use in ways that affect our consciousness. In this context, knowing which mantras have prescribed tones is essential. And when we do have free expression, what musical pitches do we use?
